MOZA R9 Review – Cutting Through the Hype

A compact, powerful direct-drive wheelbase that helped reshape sim racing.

After what feels like the entire sim-racing world already reviewed it, I finally managed to get my hands on a second-hand MOZA R9. MOZA is a Chinese manufacturer that rose extremely fast, helped by two things: the temporary unavailability of Fanatec hardware and an aggressive, well-executed marketing campaign.

Forums were suddenly filled with praise, often coming from users upgrading directly from gear-driven wheels like the Logitech G29. To be fair β€” almost anything is an upgrade from those bases.

But the real question is:
πŸ‘‰ How good is the MOZA R9 really?

🎨 Design & Build Quality

The design of the MOZA R9 is about as minimal as it gets:

  • 🧊 A simple aluminum alloy cube
  • ❄️ Cooling fins on the sides
  • πŸ”Œ Plastic rear panel
  • πŸ“ Dimensions: 12 Γ— 12 Γ— 15 cm
  • βš–οΈ Weight: 6.8 kg

What surprised me most was its size β€” it’s much smaller than expected, yet still very heavy. The compact form factor makes it easy to fit on almost any cockpit or desk mount.

At the back, you’ll find:

  • Power button
  • Dashboard connector
  • Emergency stop port
  • USB connection to PC
  • 6-pin PSU connector

The design is neutral, a bit sober, and β€” like most wheelbases β€” could use a splash of color. That said, it fits seamlessly into any sim-rig.

πŸ”Œ Power Supply & Mounting

The MOZA R9 uses an external 180W PSU.
One small but appreciated detail is the illuminated MOZA logo on the power brick β€” a nice touch compared to the usual generic black boxes.

Mounting is handled via four bottom-mounted holes, compatible with most generic wheelbase mounts. No surprises here, just solid and practical.

βš™οΈ Performance & Force Feedback

The R9 sits perfectly in the 8–10 Nm β€œsweet spot”, delivering a maximum of 9Nm of peak torque.

πŸ’‘ Why is this important?

  • 5Nm direct-drive bases often lack detail
  • Anything above 10Nm quickly becomes unnecessary for many users
  • The R9 hits the best bang-for-buck immersion level

🏎️ On Track Impressions

  • Assetto Corsa Competizione
    • Excellent finesse
    • Clear car behavior feedback
    • Track surface details come through convincingly
  • BeamNG Drive
    • Raw, lively force feedback
    • Strong reaction to terrain changes
    • Very direct and fast response

The quad-core CPU inside the base keeps everything smooth and reactive. Even under load, the base remains remarkably quiet, thanks to passive cooling only.

For a relatively young company, MOZA clearly nailed the motor engineering.

πŸ” Quick Release System

One of the highlights of the R9 is its quick release:

  • βœ… Extremely solid
  • βœ… No creaking or cracking noises
  • βœ… Feels very premium

When mounted, the wheel is fully locked in place β€” and when I say locked, I mean locked.
The downside? Removing the wheel takes some force. So much, in fact, that I managed to pull it straight into my chin.

Sadly, no footage exists of this moment.

πŸ–₯️ Software – Pit House

MOZA clearly understands the importance of an ecosystem:

  • Pedals
  • Shifter
  • Handbrake
  • Multiple steering wheels
  • Optional accessories

Everything integrates neatly, allowing users to build and grow their setup over time.

Edit 09/2025: With an evergrowing eco-system, MOZA further takes distance from the competition with their multi-function stalks and trucker steering wheel. It is without a single shred of a doubt the best eco-system for sim-tourism.

πŸ›ž Steering Wheel – MOZA ES

The wheel used in this setup is the MOZA ES, their most affordable rim.

  • 🧡 Quality leather, nicely stitched
  • 🧱 Aluminum frame
  • βš–οΈ Heavier than it looks
  • 🎨 Clean, sober design

The buttons aren’t mechanical, which is a shame, but they don’t feel cheap either.
One standout is the start button, which looks and feels like it belongs in a real car β€” incredibly useful in BeamNG.

The standard 28cm diameter is a bit small in my opinion, but MOZA offers a 31cm replacement rim at a reasonable price.

πŸ’° Price & Value

The official price of the MOZA R9 wheelbase is 469€ (PC only).
However, importing it into Europe adds significant costs:

  • πŸ“¦ Shipping: +100€
  • 🧾 Import tax: +45€
  • πŸ’Έ Total: 600€+

At that price, competition becomes fierce. Still, it’s worth remembering that sub-1000€ direct drive was once unthinkable β€” we may simply be spoiled today.

Considering the quality delivered, the price isn’t unreasonable β€” just something to be aware of.

🏁 Final Verdict

Yes β€” MOZA products are overhyped.
But importantly: MOZA delivered enough quality to justify much of that hype.

The R9 is:

  • Powerful
  • Smooth
  • Quiet
  • Compact
  • Well-supported by software
  • Backed by a strong ecosystem

I would recommend this wheelbase any day of the week. It competes comfortably with the best offerings from Europe and the US and has played a major role in pushing the industry forward.

MOZA helped force mainstream manufacturers to lower prices and raise quality β€” and for that, I’m genuinely grateful.
