Sim Racing Highlights of 2023 β A Year of Innovation
2023 is coming to an end, and what a year it has been for the sim-racing community. New hardware, surprising releases, price drops, and long-awaited products reshaped the landscape.
Here are the standout moments and products that defined sim racing in 2023.
π§ Next Level Racing HF8 β Haptics for Everyone
One of the most interesting innovations this year was the Next Level Racing HF8, a haptic feedback cushion you place directly on your seat.
Why it mattered
- Works without needing a heavy rig
- Fits easily into light seats like the Playseat Challenge
- Delivers immersive feedback through game telemetry
- Much cheaper and more flexible than Buttkicker-style systems
Where it fell short
The HF8 only receives telemetry from PC, not from consoles unless you route telemetry through a PC.
A missed opportunity β and hopefully something solved in a future v2.
Still, the idea and the accessibility it brings earn the HF8 a deserved spot in the 2023 highlight list.
β‘ Fanatecβs Dominant Year: Bundles, QR2 & More
No brand shook the market harder in 2023 than Fanatec.
Major highlights
- Ready to Race bundles: Direct drive performance priced almost like a Logitech G29 β completely disrupting the entry-level market.
- Massive Black Friday success: So big, some customers are still waiting for delivery.
- Long-awaited QR2 release: After years of anticipation, it finally arrived.
- New wheelbases introduced, strengthening their direct drive lineup.
2023 was undeniably Fanatecβs year in the wheelbase segment.
π§ CAMMUS C5 β Direct Drive for the Masses
Another standout release was the CAMMUS C5.
- 5 Nm constant torque (7 Nm peak)
- Direct drive at a shockingly low price
- Surprisingly high build quality
- A fresh, different design approach
The C5 is one of the most disruptive budget DD wheelbases the market has seen. It easily earns a spot among the most exciting releases of 2023.
π Thrustmaster T818 β A Pleasant Surprise
Thrustmaster also delivered an unexpected highlight: the T818.
Although it is priced too high to recommend widely, the driving quality genuinely impressed this year.
- Excellent performance in BeamNG.drive
- Strong, enjoyable force feedback in ACC
- Very refined driving feel
Not the most competitive value, but absolutely a memorable release in 2023.
π¦ GT Omega Prime Lite β Best Bang-for-Buck Aluminum Rig
Released early in the year, the Prime Lite became a top recommendation:
- Great value
- Very sturdy design
- Innovative wheel deck lowering mechanism
- Bundled with the comfortable RS12 seat
A rock-solid entry into the aluminum rig category.
π΄ Trak Racer TR80 Lite β Strong Answer to GT Omega
Trak Racer followed with the TR80 Lite, another excellent aluminum frame:
- Extremely complete package
- Very sharp pricing
- Aesthetic accents and branding that bring life to the frame
- Build quality slightly below GT Omega, but still excellent overall
A well-deserved highlight of the year.
π Playseat Trophy Price Drop β Instant Number One
Though not released in 2023, the Playseat Trophy became a major highlight this year thanks to a significant price drop.
Previously top 5 in tubular rigs, it became the clear #1 in its category for value.
If you’re shopping for a tubular frame, the Trophy is the one to look at.
πͺ Playseat Challenge X β A Complete Redesign
Another Playseat highlight was the Challenge X.
- A full redesign of the classic Playseat Challenge
- New ActiFit fabric introduced earlier in the year β highly comfortable
- Massive improvements across the board
- Blows its competition (including Next Level Racingβs GT Lite Pro) out of the water
- Perfect for small spaces and budget-conscious sim drivers
One of the best seat releases of the year, and a huge leap forward for foldable rigs.
π Looking Ahead to 2024.
2023 brought an impressive number of innovations, clever redesigns, and aggressive pricing.
And 2024 already looks promising, with early news from CAMMUS hinting at a new model in the C-series.
Wishing all sim racers a happy holiday season and a fantastic start to 2024.
Stay safe, enjoy your time, and see you in the next video.
