Thrustmaster TH8S Shifter
Today we’re taking a close look at the Thrustmaster TH8S, a surprisingly capable and affordable H-pattern shifter that sits below the more premium TH8A.
And honestly… this little unit might become very popular.
🎨 Design & Build
🟥 Black & Red Racing Style
Thrustmaster went for a black and red theme, and as usual, those colors instantly add a sporty, racing-inspired feel.
Despite the entire exterior being plastic, it doesn’t feel cheap — because the main touch point, the shifter knob, still feels ergonomic and comfortable.
🕹️ Shifter Knob
- Made of plastic, but shaped very nicely
- Wide, flat top → comfortable for resting your palm while cruising
- Smooth operation with a natural hand position
🛣️ H-Pattern Gates
The shift gates:
- Are well spaced
- Feel sturdy at the edges
- Provide 7 forward gears + 1 reverse

The tactile feedback is tight, defined, and surprisingly immersive for a budget shifter.
🔌 Compatibility & Connectivity
The TH8S shines when it comes to compatibility, especially considering its price.
🟦 Works on:
- PC
- PlayStation (via Thrustmaster wheelbase)
- Xbox (via Thrustmaster wheelbase)
🔗 Connection Options:
- DIN cable → wheelbase
- USB-C to USB-A → direct to PC

There’s also a foolproof slider preventing both connections from being used simultaneously — a small but smart detail.
🛠️ Mounting System
🗜️ Built-In Clamp
The included clamp is:
- Quick to mount
- Quick to remove
- Stable enough for normal use

It works, but has limitations:
- No alternative mounting solutions included
- No hard-mounting holes (if the clamp is removed, there are some holes that can be used)
- Only the clamp → not ideal for heavy racing or aggressive shifting
For casual or immersion-focused use, though, it does the job.
🚗 Shifting Feel & Experience
After testing the TH8S extensively:
✔️ Very positive overall
- No missed shifts during testing
- Good resistance when shifting
- Tight, lifelike movement
- Very ergonomic for relaxed driving
✔️ Dirt Protection
There’s even a cloth sleeve protecting the mechanism from dust — simple but highly appreciated.
✔️ Solid Performance in Sim Titles
In BeamNG, it worked instantly and felt natural throughout the drive.
⚠️ Downsides
Nothing major, but worth noting:
1. 🗜️ Only Clamp Mounting
No alternative mounting options included, limiting its usability with certain rigs.
2. 🔧 Limited Configurability
No sequential mode.
But for the target audience, that’s not necessarily a flaw — just something to be aware of.
3. 🧱 Plastic Shifter Knob
Feels fine as it is ergonomically. Can be replaced with third party modifications.
💶 Price & Value
At 70€, it’s not ultra-cheap — but the value is absolutely there because of:
- Good build quality
- Excellent ergonomics
- Foolproof connectivity
- Full console compatibility
- Global Thrustmaster availability
For console players, this is the best budget shifter you can buy today.
Your choices are limited anyway — and among them, the TH8S wins easily.
For PC users, it’s a fantastic shifter for:
- BeamNG
- Truck Simulator
- Slow and immersive driving
But for racing titles?
The clamp mounting and plastic knob may hold it back.
If you race competitively, something like the SHH NEWT 2 may be a better fit.
🏁 Conclusion
The Thrustmaster TH8S delivers far more than its price suggests.
It’s user-friendly, ergonomic, compatible across all platforms, and offers a convincing and satisfying shifting experience.
Not perfect — but for casual drivers, especially on consoles, it’s easily one of the best bang-for-buck purchases in the sim racing world.
