MOZA R5 Review

Today we take a deep dive into the MOZA R5, one of the smallest and most interesting entry-level direct drive wheelbases on the market. With 5.5 Nm of torque, premium-feeling hardware, and excellent software support, it aims to introduce newcomers to the world of direct drive.
But is it worth its price point? Let’s find out.

🧱 Design & Build Quality

The MOZA R5 base is essentially a tiny matte-black aluminum cube — compact, lightweight, and simplified to the extreme.
On the back, you’ll find:

  • USB connection to PC
  • Power button
  • RJ12 ports for peripherals

It’s probably the smallest DD casing available and weighs roughly “a pack of flour”— very easy to mount or place on smaller rigs.

Despite its size, the base outputs 5.5 Nm of torque and features MOZA’s excellent metal quick release, which remains one of the best in the entry-level segment.

🎮 The ES Steering Wheel

Also used in the R9 bundle, the 27 cm D-shaped ES wheel is:

  • Small but visually appealing
  • Wrapped in high-quality leather
  • Structurally solid thanks to aluminum elements
  • Equipped with a great quick release
  • Enhanced with a subtle LED rev-bar

However, it lacks more advanced hardware features such as:

  • Rotary encoders
  • Mechanical switches
  • An easy way to adjust ABS/TC on the fly

Beautiful and premium-feeling, but not perfect.

🦶 SRP-Lite Pedals

The included SRP-Lite pedal set is made entirely of steel.

Features:

  • 2 pedals using Hall sensors
  • Adjustable pedal faces (height)
  • Pedals can slide independently along the base plate

Limitations:

  • No elastomers or brake dampening
  • No easy upgrade path toward a progressive brake feel

Solid build quality, but a bit too simple for serious immersion.

🖥️ Software — MOZA’s Biggest Strength

MOZA Pit House is arguably the best software suite in the industry for beginners and enthusiasts alike.

What you get:

  • Game-specific presets
  • GT-style and Performance profiles
  • Full Advanced settings
  • FFB Effect Equalizer
  • Clean layout and intuitive navigation

It’s easy for new users and powerful for experienced sim racers — an excellent balance.

🏎️ Driving Experience

đźš— Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC)

The moment you start driving, you notice something very different:

  • Extremely smooth steering
  • No notches like gear-driven or belt-driven wheels
  • Very comfortable but lacking sharp detail

The best way to describe it?
“Driving a Renault Talisman in comfort mode.”

Pleasant for cruising and lighter racing, but:

  • Lacks finer road detail
  • Doesn’t communicate the car’s behavior clearly
  • Leaves experienced drivers wanting more torque (8–10 Nm ideal)

đźš™ BeamNG

BeamNG suits the R5 much better:

  • “Normal car” simulation fits the comfort-focused torque level
  • Road surfaces and terrain changes feel clear enough
  • Excellent for beginners and even drifters

Still, compared to a real car, the power feels light — even BeamNG can’t fully mask that.

🌡️ Heat Build-Up & Concerns

After a two-hour driving session, the base became extremely hot — “you could bake an egg on it.”

Reason:

  • No active cooling
  • Small cooling fins
  • Reliance solely on the aluminum casing for heat dissipation

This raises long-term reliability concerns, especially since high heat is the enemy of electronics.

Note: with the current software, the issue is mitigated

đź”— Ecosystem

MOZA’s ecosystem is impressive:

  • Multiple steering wheels
  • The highly praised FSR Formula wheel
  • Dashboards
  • Handbrakes
  • Shifters

Everything they make is generally well-built and well-received — no issues here.

đź’° Price & Value

This is where things get tricky.

  • US price: ~500 USD
  • EU price: 550–570€

For an entry-level wheel, this pushes above the psychological 500€ threshold.
And while the product is premium, the price is high compared to competitors.

The R5 bundle feels overspecced for entry-level:

  • Leather instead of rubber
  • Metal QR instead of cheaper alternatives
  • Excellent design but unnecessary for the target market

MOZA could have cut 100€ off easily by simplifying the wheel and QR.

🎯 Final Verdict — Who Is the R5 For?

The MOZA R5 is a fantastic first direct drive experience if:

  • You’re upgrading from a Logitech G29/G923
  • You want smooth FFB and comfort
  • You prefer BeamNG, drifting, or casual racing

But if you’re coming from a Thrustmaster T300, the jump in performance may feel too small.

The R5 is:

  • Smooth
  • Refined
  • Well-built
  • Supported by excellent software

…but lacking in torque, detail, and long-term cooling efficiency.

For serious sim racers or competitive ACC drivers, stepping up to a MOZA R9, CAMMUS, or Fanatec 8 Nm will make a much bigger difference.
